How people name their cars
Naming a car is more common than most people admit. It usually happens by accident: you call it something in your first week, it sticks, and after a year it would feel disloyal to change it. The names that stick fall into a few groups. Human names are the oldest, with Betsy, Bertha and Ruby the most familiar, and they suit a car that has been around the block. Color names (Old Blue) suit a car that is mostly known by its paint. Attitude names, like Bruiser or Ranger, suit a truck or an SUV. Jokes about the car's condition, such as Rattletrap, suit anything with more than 150,000 miles.
The best names match the car's face. A round little hatchback wants a round little name like Pebble or Toast. A big pickup with a deep engine note sounds wrong as a Poppy and right as an Anvil. Read the car the way you would read a person: how it moves, how it sounds, how it wears its age.
Gender is an open question. Many owners call a car she, a habit that comes from the way ships are named, and plenty of cars have male names. Choose whatever feels right; the car will not object.
Names for a truck, van or SUV
Bigger vehicles usually take stronger names, and the tough style leans that way: single hard-sounding words like Bruiser, Ranger or Diesel. A van with a bed in the back often takes a homely name (Gladys, Wilbur) because it is a house as much as a vehicle. A work truck does best with an old man's name such as Earl or Otis.
For a first car, go with the funny style. It says the car is not beautiful and you know it, which takes the pressure off when it makes a strange noise.
Naming your car after a color or a feature
If you cannot decide, use what you can see. A blue car becomes Old Blue, a dented door becomes Lefty, a loud exhaust becomes Thunder. Features make the best names because they are true, and the story of the name comes ready-made. Use the first-letter control if you want the name to match your own initial.

- Old BlueA color plus Old, which is the way people talk about a car they have driven for years.
- GusOne syllable, dependable and slightly grumpy; suits a pickup that never quits.

- Sir RustyA knightly title on a corroding fender; it makes the rust sound like a coat of arms.
- Lord ClunkingtonLong and pompous for an old car, which is where the joke is.
- Wilbur the ReliableA plain human name with an epithet, which suggests a car that has never missed a school run.
- Puddle JumperA name for a small car that seems to float over rain and potholes.
Choosing a car name that sticks
- Wait a week. The best car names appear in the first few drives, from something you said out loud without thinking.
- Match the name's size to the car. Tiny cars take short, soft names; big vehicles can carry two syllables and a hard consonant.
- Use a feature you can see or hear: the color, a dent, the sound of the engine. Those names make their own stories.
- Say the name when the car does something annoying. If it feels natural to say Come on, Bertha, you have found it.
- Avoid the name of a real person you know. Talking to the car will get confusing and you may offend someone.
Questions people ask
What are good names for a car?
Good car names are short and suit the car's look and personality: Betsy, Bertha, Ruby or Gus for classics; Pebble or Biscuit for small cars; Bruiser or Diesel for trucks. Old Blue works if you go by color.
What are funny car names?
Funny car names admit the car's flaws: Rattletrap, Sir Rusty, Lord Clunkington or Puddle Jumper. Older cars are especially good for these because the joke gets truer with each mile.
Why do people name their cars?
People name cars because they spend hours in them and the car behaves like a character, with moods, noises and quirks. A name makes the relationship easier and gives you something to say when it will not start.
Should I give my car a male or a female name?
Either. Many owners use female names, a habit borrowed from ships, but male and gender-neutral names are just as common. Pick the one that fits how the car feels to you.
What do you name a truck?
Trucks take strong or old-fashioned names: Bruiser, Ranger, Diesel or Anvil for a tough feel, or Earl, Otis and Hank for a friendly one. Use the Tough style for a list to choose from.
