Why chicken names are funnier than most pet names
A backyard chicken flock is a comedy cast that arrives in a box. Hens have distinct, confident personalities and very little embarrassment, and their owners respond by giving them names that are jokes, puns, food references and the names of great-aunts. Hens named Henrietta, Gladys and Peggy are the classics. Hens named Nugget and Frittata are the ones people remember.
Practical naming is different from naming a dog. You have several birds, often the same breed and color, and you need to tell them apart at a distance. That is why plumage names work so well: Speckles, Copper, Domino and Snowball describe what you can see from the kitchen window. A flock of six identical brown hens is a good place for a theme instead, whether that is old-lady names, baked goods, or characters from a book you like.
Roosters get names too, and there is a tradition of grand, bossy ones: Napoleon, Duke, Chanticleer. Many towns limit or ban roosters, so check the rules where you live before you name one. If you are not sure whether your chick is a hen or a rooster, and sexing young chicks is not always reliable, a name like Pepper or Sunny will survive either result.
Funny chicken names and puns
The chicken pun runs on a small toolbox: cluck, peck, feather, egg, scratch, and the suffixes -ington and -sworth. Add a title such as Captain, Duchess or General and you get Captain Clucksalot or Duchess Featherbottom. Food names are the other big joke, because owners like to name a hen after the thing she will lay or be served next to. Waffle, Frittata, Quiche and Biscuit all work, and none of them is likely to appear on the dinner menu.
If you have children, funny names get them involved, since a child will call a hen Sir Cluckington gladly and will remember which bird is which.
Hen names, rooster names and unknown chicks
Hen names lean on old-fashioned women's names: Mabel, Ethel, Gertie, Dottie. Rooster names lean on generals, dukes and cowboys. Use the girl, boy and either buttons above to switch, where girl means hen and boy means rooster. The either list holds names such as Pepper, Sunny, Scout and Clover that are fine for young chicks whose sex has not yet been settled.

Tips for naming chickens
- Start with what you see. Plumage color, comb shape and feather patterns help you tell a group of look-alike hens apart, and they make the best names.
- Choose a theme for a big flock. Old-lady names, baked goods, gemstones or herbs make the names easy to remember and fun to say.
- Give a chick a gender-neutral name until it is clear whether it is a hen or a rooster. Early sexing is not always reliable.
- If you keep a rooster, check your local rules first. Many towns limit or ban them, so name him after you know he can stay.
- Let children help name the flock. They will look after the birds more if they are named, and a silly name is easier for a small child to remember than a plain one.
