How church names are chosen
A church name usually answers one of three questions: what does this congregation honor, who does it belong to and where is it? Catholic, Orthodox and Anglican parishes mostly answer the first with a saint or a mystery of the faith, such as St. Brigid's, Holy Trinity or Our Lady of Grace. Many Protestant congregations answer with a place from Scripture (Bethel, Zion, Calvary, Bethany) or a virtue (Grace, Hope, Faith). Newer independent churches answer the third with a community name or a word that describes what they want the place to be, like Anchor, Harbor or Open Door.
Denomination often comes into the name. First Baptist, Trinity Lutheran, Grace Presbyterian and Trinity United Methodist all tell a visitor what kind of service to expect. Many newer churches drop the denomination on the sign and keep a plain word like Community, Fellowship or Church, which some people find more welcoming and others find less clear. If your congregation belongs to a denomination, ask whether it has naming conventions or a required legal form before you print anything.
The practical checks matter as much as the meaning. A church name goes on a sign, a website, a bulletin, a bank account and a legal filing, and people will search for it by name plus town. A name that is one word away from a big church in the next town can send visitors to the wrong parking lot. Read the name aloud as a stranger would, and see whether it says church, chapel or fellowship at first hearing.
Church plant names and community fellowships
A new church, a church plant, often wants a name that does not assume the visitor already knows the tradition. That is where a single-word name (Harbor, Threshold, Lantern) or a place name (Eastside Church, Riverside Chapel) comes in. Short names also work as a domain and a social handle, and they fit on a coffee cup or a lawn sign.
Community-style names do a different job: they tell the neighborhood that the church is for everyone nearby. Open Door Church, Common Ground Fellowship and Neighborhood Chapel are common examples. Pair a warm word with a plain tail like Church or Fellowship, and add [Your town] where it is useful. Whatever you choose, run it past a pastor, an elder or a board member who will not be embarrassed to say it out loud every Sunday.

Choosing a church name
- Start with your tradition. If you belong to a denomination, ask whether it has conventions (a saint, a required legal form, a district approval) before you adopt any name.
- Search your town plus the name. Two churches with nearly the same name in the same county confuse visitors, funeral directors and mail carriers.
- Say it in a sentence a visitor would use: "We go to Grace Lutheran on Elm." If the name sounds awkward in a sentence, it will sound awkward on the phone.
- Choose words that will still work in twenty years. A trend word may date quickly, while a place, a Scripture name or a virtue will last.
- Check the domain and the social handle early, and consider adding the town name to make them unique.
Questions people ask
What are some good church names?
Good church names include saint names such as St. Brigid Catholic Church, Scripture names such as Bethel or Calvary, virtue names such as Grace and Hope, and community names such as Open Door Community Church or Riverside Chapel.
How do I name a new church?
Decide first whether you want to signal a denomination. Then choose a saint, a Scripture place, a virtue or a neighborhood name, check that no nearby church uses it, and confirm the domain and the legal filing requirements.
Why are so many churches named after saints?
Catholic, Orthodox and Anglican parishes traditionally dedicate a church to a saint or a holy mystery, so the name honors that figure and often reflects the community's heritage. Many Protestant churches use Scripture places instead.
What is a church plant?
A church plant is a newly started congregation, often begun by an existing church or a denomination. Church plants frequently choose short, welcoming names and place names because they are introducing themselves to a neighborhood.
Do churches need a legal name?
Most churches register a legal name for the bank and tax filings, and it should match the name on the sign. Check your state's rules and your denomination's requirements before you print materials.
