Why some letters make better tags
A tag is a signature, and it gets written thousands of times, fast, so the letters have to be easy to draw. Writers tend to favor S, K, R and E for that reason: S is one curved stroke that can be stretched and looped, K has two arms that can shoot off in any direction, R has a leg and a bowl that give it a flick, and E has stacked bars that are easy to connect. Letters such as Z and X give hard angles that contrast with the curves. You can see this in the balance of tag names: lots of hard consonants, few letters that look alike when they are drawn in a hurry.
Length matters as much as letter shape. Short tags, three to five letters, are fast, sit neatly on a small sticker and fill a canvas or a piece of paper with a big, bold outline. Longer names are for pieces, where the letters get elaborate, interlock and become a picture. That is the appeal of wildstyle: the name is a puzzle with its own logic. Choose the length to match the kind of work you plan to do.
Legal note: this page is for sketchbooks, art classes, commissioned murals, digital art and permitted walls. Painting on property without permission is illegal, and a cool name does not change that. Many cities have free or legal walls, community mural programs and youth art classes where a tag name is welcome.
Word tags and crew names
Some writers choose a real word, like Static or Halo. A word is easier for other people to say, which helps when you introduce yourself at a jam or a class. It also carries a mood, and it can grow into an image on a canvas or a poster. The catch is that plenty of people have the same idea, so consider adding a letter, a number or a small twist in spelling to make it your own.
A crew name is usually two or three letters, often the initials of the members or an in-joke, followed by the word crew. Three letters are a good number: easy to write big, easy to shout, and enough combinations that a group can find one no one else uses. The generator uses letters that draw well.

Picking a tag you'll want to write for years
- Write it twenty times in a row on paper. The name that stays fun and legible by the twentieth is the one worth keeping.
- Check the first and last letters. A strong opening letter and a letter that can carry a flourish at the end give you the most to play with.
- Avoid letters that look alike when drawn fast, such as n and u or a and o, unless that ambiguity is part of the design.
- Search the name before you commit. Many writers keep their name for life, and you don't want to share it with someone in your city.
- Practice on paper, a chalkboard, a legal wall or a digital tablet. Ask before painting anywhere, and use permission walls and community mural projects.
Questions people ask
What is a good graffiti name?
A good graffiti name is short, easy to write quickly and made of letters that draw well, such as S, K, R and E. It should be easy to say and not already used by someone in your area.
How do you pick a graffiti tag name?
Start with letters you enjoy drawing, then build a short name of three to six letters. Write it repeatedly to see how it flows, and search to check it is unique. Decide on a word tag or an invented one.
Is it legal to use a graffiti name?
Choosing and drawing a name in a sketchbook or on a permitted wall is fine. Painting on property without permission is illegal in most places, so use legal walls, commissioned murals and art programs.
What letters are best for graffiti?
Writers tend to like S, K, R and E because they are easy to stretch, connect and decorate. Z and X give sharp angles. Avoid names full of similar-looking letters, since they blur in a fast tag.
What is the difference between a tag and a piece?
A tag is a quick signature with a name in a single color. A piece is a larger, more detailed work with colors, outlines and effects. Short names suit tags, and longer wildstyle names suit pieces.
