What makes a name sound halfling
Halfling names sound like a village that has never been in a hurry. They are short, warm and a little old-fashioned, taken from the English countryside more than from any invented language: Barnaby, Hattie, Wendell, Posy. There is no stray apostrophe and no y where an i would do. The names sit comfortably next to a plate of scones because that is the sort of place halflings are from.
Family names do the second half of the job. Most halfling surnames are two everyday words fused, one from the garden or larder and one from a place or a boundary: Applefold, Thimblegate, Willowbrook. They read as farms and lanes, which is what they mostly were. A halfling family name tells you the family has been in one place long enough to be named after it.
Nicknames matter because halflings are sociable and talk about each other constantly. A halfling with a plain name will pick up something like Two-Pies or Late-for-Supper by his second week in town, and it will stay. Give a halfling character a nickname that happened to them, not one they chose.
Hobbit names and halfling names
"Hobbit" is Tolkien's word, and his hobbit names (Baggins, Took, Brandybuck and their first names) belong to his books. Many people who search for hobbit names want that same cozy, pastoral feel for a character of their own, and that is what the halfling style on this page offers, without copying any of his names.
To keep it recognizably hobbit-like, choose the family style and lean on food, gardens and homely place-words. Halfling names of that kind sound as if they came from a country parish register: Elspeth Cidermeadow, Osbert Penbarrow, Nettie Hazelbottom.

Choosing a halfling name
- Stay in the countryside. Names taken from herbs, flowers, food and old English villages sound right, and ones taken from mountains and swords do not.
- Give the family name a landscape or a larder word. Something with -brook, -gate or -hill anchors the family to a place.
- Let a nickname come from an anecdote. "Two-Pies" is funny because it implies a scene; "Tubby" is just a description.
- Keep first names to two syllables. Halflings are friendly, and their names get shortened the minute they arrive.
- If your halfling is an adventurer, pick a family name that sounds respectable. The gap between the name and the profession is where the character lives.
Questions people ask
What are good halfling names?
Good halfling names are homely and old-fashioned: Barnaby, Hattie, Wendell, Posy and Cobb, paired with a countryside family name such as Applefold, Thimblegate or Willowbrook. Add a nickname such as Two-Pies if the halfling has a habit worth remembering.
What are some hobbit names?
Hobbit is Tolkien's word, and his hobbit names are from his books. For similar cozy names of your own, use halfling-style names such as Ambrose Willowbrook or Nettie Copperwick, which have the same countryside feel without copying his characters.
Do halflings have last names?
Yes. Halfling family names are usually two ordinary words joined together, one from the garden or larder and one from a place, such as Barleyhill or Plumbottom. They tend to name a farm, a lane or a village.
How do I make a halfling name?
Start with a short, warm English-sounding first name, then add a family name built from a food or plant word and a place word. Optionally add a nickname that comes from a story. The result should sound like it belongs in a village.
What are good female halfling names?
Posy, Hattie, Clover, Marigold, Nettie and Elspeth all work. Halfling women's names are usually flowers, herbs or old-fashioned English names, and they are often shortened to something even shorter within a week.
