How ship and couple names are made

A ship name, or couple name, blends two names into one. The word "ship" comes from fandom slang for a relationship, where fans pair characters they want to see together, and the same trick later spread to real couples. The method is the same in both cases: keep the front of one name, keep the back of the other, and stitch them where the sounds meet.

The seam decides everything. The best blends join at a vowel or at a letter both names share, so you get Romeo and Juliet turning into Romiet rather than a pile of consonants. When the halves clash, you get something like Tomlil, which is technically a blend and impossible to say. Short names blend more easily, and names that end in a vowel or start with a soft consonant usually combine into something smooth.

Order matters. Samaya and Mayasam are the same letters and the first is by far the better name. Try both orders, and if neither works, use a short nickname or a middle name in place of the full name.

Couple names for weddings and anniversaries

Real couples use blends for wedding hashtags, monograms, engraved gifts, a joint social media account or a shared pet's name. For a hashtag, check that the name reads clearly with no spaces and no accidental words, because the capital letters disappear in captions. For a monogram or a sign, a shorter blend is easier to print.

Do a quick search on any name you plan to use publicly. A couple name can accidentally match a word, a product or a well-known pairing.

Ship names for fictional characters

Fans blend character names to make tags, story titles and fan-art labels. The convention is to put the more prominent character first, or to choose whichever order sounds better. Use the full first names, not surnames, unless the surnames are what people call the characters. If a blend comes out awkward, other options are to join first name and surname or to shorten one of the names.

A shortlist of 20 ship names

  • SamayaSam and Maya. The shared a makes the seam invisible, and it reads like a real name.
  • RomietRomeo and Juliet. The front of the first, the back of the second, and it is easy to say.
  • JordexisJordan and Alexis. Keeps the strong start of one and the ending of the other, which is the classic pattern.
  • EllacusElla and Marcus. The -lla and -cus join smoothly because the two syllables share a rhythm.
  • AntopatraAntony and Cleopatra. Very long, but each half is recognizable, which is what makes a ship name.
  • ElizarcyElizabeth and Darcy. The z carries the sound of the first name into the second.
  • PribenPriya and Ben. Short and crisp, with a plain ending that sounds like a real name.
  • TomilyTom and Lily. Taking Tom whole and adding the end of Lily keeps both names clear.
  • TheonoraTheo and Nora. The o at the join carries straight from one name into the other.
  • ChrisandraChris and Alexandra. It sounds almost like a name in its own right.
  • BensophieBen and Sophie. Ben stays whole, which suits couples where one name is short.
  • LiamaraLiam and Mara. The m in the middle is shared, so the blend feels like it was always one name.
  • DannahDan and Hannah. Overlap on the n makes the blend look like one word.
  • KatrickKat and Patrick. The sharp k and the -rick ending give it a punchy sound.
  • MatenaMateo and Lena. The middle e drops out naturally, leaving something soft and pleasant.
  • RosalynRose and Lynn. Reads like a traditional name, which is what most couples want on a card.
  • OlivielOlivia and Gabriel. Long, but the -iel at the end makes it feel elegant.
  • NoahlieNoah and Natalie. Uses one syllable from each side; a pair in which the names start alike.
  • ZanyahZane and Aaliyah. Strong z at the front, long a at the end; sounds like a place.
  • LucashaLucas and Natasha. Common ending in a, so it flows into a nickname easily.

Getting a ship name that sounds right

  • Try both orders. Sam and Maya blends to Samaya, while Maya and Sam gives Mayasam, and only one is usable.
  • Look for a shared letter or sound in the middle of the two names. It gives the blend a natural seam.
  • Use nicknames if the full names clash. Ben and Sophie blends better than Benjamin and Sophia.
  • Read the blend aloud, then read it again in a text-message voice. A name that looks fine but is hard to say will not get used.
  • For a hashtag, type it in lowercase with no spaces and check that it does not spell an unfortunate word.

Questions people ask

What is a ship name?

A ship name is a blend of two names, such as Samaya from Sam and Maya. The term comes from fandom slang for a relationship: fans blend the names of characters they pair up. Real couples use the same idea.

How do you make a couple name?

Take the beginning of one name and the ending of the other, joining them at a shared vowel or letter. Try both orders and pick the version that is easiest to say. Enter both names above for a list of options.

What is a good couple name generator?

A good one takes two names, blends them in several ways and lets you choose. Enter two first names above, then scan the list for blends that read like real words or names.

Why do some ship names look strange?

Blends that join two consonant clusters, or put two hard sounds side by side, come out clunky. Names that end in a vowel or start with a soft consonant blend best. Try a nickname or the other order.

Can I use a ship name as a wedding hashtag?

Yes. Check that the blend is readable without capital letters, does not spell a word you did not intend, and is not already used by another couple. Search the hashtag before you print it.
