How a Vietnamese name is built

A Vietnamese name has up to three parts, and they run from the family name to the personal one. In Nguyễn Thị Lan, Nguyễn is the family name, Thị is a middle or padding name, and Lan is the given name. This page writes names in that native order. If you need the Western order for a form or a story, flip it to Lan Nguyễn, which is what many overseas Vietnamese do.

Only about a hundred family names are in common use, and they are strikingly lopsided. Nguyễn alone belongs to roughly three in ten Vietnamese, followed by Trần, Lê, Phạm and Hoàng (or Huỳnh in the south). That is why the given name carries all the individuality, and why people are addressed by it with a kinship word in front: Chị Lan, Anh Hùng, Cô Mai.

The middle name is where the two eras show. Thị was for centuries the standard middle name for women, and Văn the standard for men. They are inseparable from the given name and are not used alone, and both have faded among younger families, who now pick a meaningful two-part first name like Bảo Châu or Gia Huy instead. The generator's Modern and Traditional chips give you each.

Why the tone marks matter

Vietnamese is tonal, and the marks are part of the spelling, not decoration. Hoa means flower while Hòa means harmony, and Lê is a surname while Lễ is a ceremony. In the diaspora the marks are often dropped, so Nguyễn becomes Nguyen on a US form, but on a Vietnamese page that would look like a misspelling.

Most given names are chosen for their meanings. Girls often get flowers, gems and gentle qualities (Lan, orchid; Mai, apricot blossom; Ngọc, jade), while boys get strength, brightness and virtue (Hùng, brave; Minh, bright; Đức, virtue). Meanings appear beside the traditional names above where they are well established.

Using Vietnamese names correctly

  • Keep the order family, middle, given unless your setting is overseas. The Western flip puts the given name first, as in Lan Nguyễn.
  • Never split Thị or Văn from the given name. In conversation people say Lan or Hùng, not Thị or Văn.
  • Choose the era. Thị Lan and Văn Hùng belong to grandparents and parents, while Bảo Châu and Gia Huy belong to children born in the last twenty years.
  • Type diacritics with a Vietnamese keyboard method rather than pasting from a font that lacks them. Ơ, ư and đ should render as their own letters.
  • The first-letter filter works on the family name, which is how Vietnamese names are ordered and sorted.

Questions people ask

What is the most common Vietnamese last name?

Nguyễn, by a wide margin. Roughly 31 percent of Vietnamese people carry it, ahead of Trần (about 11 percent), Lê and Phạm. The Vietnamese surname pool is small, with about a hundred names in common use.

What do Thị and Văn mean in Vietnamese names?

They are traditional padding names. Thị is a female marker and Văn is a male marker, and both come between the family name and the given name. They are not standalone middle names and are used less often by younger generations.

Do Vietnamese put the family name first?

Yes. The order is family name, middle name, given name, so Nguyễn Văn Hùng is a person called Hùng from the Nguyễn family. Vietnamese are addressed by their given name, often with a title such as Anh or Chị.

How do you choose a Vietnamese name?

Most parents pick a given name for its meaning, often a flower or gem for girls and a virtue such as bravery or brightness for boys. Sound matters too, so many choose two-syllable combinations that flow when the full name is said aloud.

What are popular Vietnamese baby names?

Names in wide use among recent generations include Bảo Châu, Khánh Linh, Ngọc Anh and Gia Hân for girls, and Gia Bảo, Minh Quân, Minh Khôi and Đức Anh for boys. Traditional middle names Thị and Văn are used less than they once were.
