What makes a name a Christmas name

Christmas names come from four places. Some are the holiday itself: Noel, the French word for Christmas, and Natalie and Natalia, which come from the Latin for the day of birth and were once given to children born on December 25. Others come from the nativity story, such as Mary, Gabriel, Joseph and Emmanuel. A third group is winter greenery and light: Holly, Ivy, Juniper, Star. The last is Saint Nicholas, source of Nicholas, Nikolai, Klaus and Kris.

The names that age best are the ones that carry the connection lightly. Noel and Holly are unmistakable, but they read as ordinary names in July. Mistletoe or Snowflake, used as first names, are better kept for pets, characters and nicknames, where a joke can pay off every day of the year.

The other test is the surname. A holiday first name next to a very seasonal last name (Holly Evergreen) turns into a costume. One seasonal element is enough. Pair Noel with a plain family name and it will last.

Christmas baby names

For a baby born in December, the given-names style gives you the classics: Noelle, Natalie, Nicholas, Gabriel, Holly and Carol, with meanings where the name has a clear one. Names taken from the story (Gabriel, Mary, Joseph) usually attract fewer comments than an obvious pick like Christmas, and they last through adulthood. A middle name is an easy way to carry a Christmas name without committing the first name to it.

The gender control changes the lists; neutral names include Noel, Robin, Rowan, Kris and Winter, which are used for any child.

Christmas names for pets and characters

Seasonal words make pet names, and the storybook style builds a full name for a fictional character or a Christmas story: a Victorian-sounding first name with a winter surname. Use it for cast lists in a school play, a holiday card sender or a village in a Christmas book.

Choosing a Christmas name that lasts

  • Use the holiday in the middle name or a nickname if you are unsure. That leaves room to change your mind later.
  • For a baby, pick names with a story attached (Gabriel, Nicholas) over names that are only decoration (Snowflake).
  • For pets, seasonal words such as Nutmeg, Cinnamon and Mistletoe are fine, and easy to call across a yard.
  • For a story or play, mix one seasonal name in a cast of plain ones. If everyone is named Holly or Frost, the joke wears out.
  • Say the name with the surname out loud. A name like Noel Nash sounds smooth, but two adjacent n sounds can blur, so check it.
