How a Halloween name works

A Halloween name has to be understood in one second across a crowded room. That is why the best ones use a short stack of signals: a title (Count, Madame, Professor), a first name that sounds old or foreign, and a surname made from something grave or cold. Blackwood, Nightshade and Marrow all say the same thing in different registers.

Then there is the joke layer. Halloween is one of the few nights when a pun on your own costume is expected, so names like Skeletta Bonebottom or Count Snacksalot are as welcome as a straight-faced Baron Grimshaw. Decide early which one you are doing. A serious name with a silly costume, or a goofy name with a serious one, is a common way to get a laugh.

Sound matters more than you might expect. Hard k and g sounds (Graves, Cryptkeeper), long o and oo vowels (Hollowell, Moonwort) and words with an -ow ending give names a spooky sound. Soft, bright sounds tend to pull a name toward cute, which suits kids and pets.

Witchy names

The witchy style draws on herbs and hedgerow plants: Hemlock, Thistle, Sorrel, Belladonna, Mugwort. Some are real magical-folklore plants and some are simply pleasant old words. A witch's name also works well with a title such as Auntie, Granny or Old Mother, which gives her a village rather than a coven.

Surnames in this style tend to be kitchen and field words (Cauldron, Broomstick, Toadflax) or old English place-name endings like -wick and -wood.

Halloween names for pets and pumpkins

The silly style is the easiest to use for a dog in a costume or a carved pumpkin with a face. A pet with a title, such as Sir Fangs-a-Lot, wears the costume better than one with an ordinary name. For a pumpkin, choose something short and round like Boo or Wobbles, because you will be writing it on masking tape.

20 hand-picked halloween names

  • Mortiana BlackwoodA first name that leans on the dead and a surname that leans on the forest. Sounds like a gothic manor.
  • Lazarus GravesA name that has already come back from the dead once, and the surname makes sure you get it.
  • Count Ambrose NightshadeThe title and a poison plant surname do most of the work; Ambrose adds an old-money ring.
  • Countess Vesper AshgraveVesper means evening, so the name arrives with a sunset and a burned-out garden.
  • Baron Thaddeus GrimshawStern and formal. A Halloween name for someone who plans to stay in character all night.
  • Ophelia MarrowSoft and tragic first name against a hard bone surname, a pleasing clash.
  • Corvus DuskmoorCorvus is Latin for crow, so the name is quietly on theme even if no one at the party gets it.
  • Hazel HexleyA friendly-sounding witch whose surname carries the hex. The alliteration helps.
  • Belladonna ThorneA poison plant name and a thorny surname: sharp, and very hard to ignore.
  • Morgana CinderpotRegal first name, humble kitchen surname, like a witch who does her own cooking.
  • Auntie HemlockA title turns a poison into a neighbor. Funny because it sounds so homely.
  • Old Mother MugwortVillage-witch energy in three words; the rhythm reminds people of a nursery rhyme.
  • Griselda ToadflaxOld-fashioned and a little grumpy. The toad in the surname does the rest.
  • Ghoulia Von BooGhoul plus a German-style Von and a ghost's noise. Every part is a wink.
  • Skeletta BonebottomAn easy skeleton-costume name that lets you make the same joke twice.
  • Batilda FangsworthA bat plus Matilda, with a vampire-noble surname; it sounds like a dowager with wings.
  • Count Snacks-a-LotA silly title-plus-thing name, and the natural choice for someone dressed as a vampire at a candy table.
  • Zombina CreepwellSounds cheerful for a zombie, which is the joke; the -well ending sounds like a real surname.
  • Wobbles the PumpkinA name for a pumpkin, a ghost or a small child in a sheet: cute, easy and true to the night.
  • BooTwo letters short of nothing, and it does exactly what a ghost's name needs to do.

Choosing a name for the night

  • Pick the tone before the name. Serious names need a costume that looks the part; silly names forgive a low-effort one.
  • Write your name on the tag or the invitation in full, title included. The title is half of the effect.
  • For a group, share a surname. The Blackwoods, the Hexleys or the Bonebottoms look like a family the moment they walk in.
  • For a pet or a small child, keep it to two syllables so it can be called across a lawn.
  • Test the name out loud. If you cannot say it in a low, dramatic voice without laughing, it is a silly name, so lean into that.
