Why dragonborn put the clan first
The most distinctive thing about dragonborn names is the order. In the standard tabletop convention the clan name comes first and the personal name second, so a dragonborn introduces herself as "Drazikhar Kiava" and not the other way round. The reasoning is cultural, and it is easy to roleplay: to a dragonborn, honor and reputation belong to the clan before they belong to an individual, and that is what the name shows.
Clan names are long, and they should be. Where personal names stick to two or three syllables (Bahash, Zharoth, Khoroth), the clan name is where a dragonborn writer can stretch out: Thalendrax, Orisulmiir, Kherivorn. Read them aloud and you can hear a lineage of ancestors. Use the long version in formal introductions and let players shorten it for everyday conversation.
Draconic phonetics are what separate a dragonborn name from an orc or a dwarf name. Where orc names bark and dwarf names clunk, dragonborn ones hiss and roll: sh, kh, th, zh and long r sounds, with vowels held wide. They are hard names, but not blunt ones. Each seems to carry a bit of smoke in the vowels.
Childhood names and earned names
Many dragonborn also carry a childhood name, a nickname that grows out of something they did when they were small, such as Wing-Tester, Snapjaw or Hatchdance. In the usual convention a dragonborn sheds it at adulthood, or keeps it out of pride or affection. It is a good hook for a character: ask why your dragonborn still goes by Ember when her clan calls her something grander.
Dragonborn names for a female character follow the same rules as for a male one, with the given name ending in a vowel (-ra, -sha, -va). The clan name stays identical, since the clan does not change with the sex of the child.
Dragonborn names: 22 picks and the reasoning
- Drazikhar BahashClan first, then a two-syllable personal name: the classic dragonborn order in its shortest form.
- Thalendrax ZharothLong, hard clan name and a short personal one. It sounds like ancient lineage.
- Kherashtal KhorothA chain of k and sh sounds that makes it feel hissed rather than spoken.
- Orisulmiir SharakThe -miir ending is unusual, and it gives the clan name a slow, drawn-out finish.
- Serivorn KeshNeutral and clipped, which makes it a good name for a courier or an outrider.
- Vexethys KiashaA female name with a soft sh ending and a clan name that hisses to match.
- Norandrion AzaxaSounds noble; the x gives it an unexpected edge.
- BahashThe plain given-name style; short, easy to say and clearly draconic.
- ZharothThe zh opening is rare in English, which sets it apart from orc and elf names immediately.
- GhorulHeavy and rounded, a fit for a paladin or a tank-style fighter.
- VazeshA quick, sliding name: the kind of dragonborn who does not waste a step.
- KhorionSlightly softer, and it could sit comfortably in a court or a temple.
- SythysA short female name with a hiss built into it.
- IluraOpen vowels and a liquid r; a dragonborn scholar or a healer.
- ZishitheAn unusual long name for a female dragonborn who is a priestess or a bard.
- KiavaSimple and bright, and a good match for a young character.
- Kesh "Ember" of Clan KherashtalThe childhood name is a small detail that says a lot about how this character grew up.
- Wing-TesterA childhood name that is a story: the dragonborn who jumped from the roof and fell.
- SnapjawBluntness that matches a young dragonborn with a temper.
- HatchdanceUnusual and warm, and it suggests a family that celebrates.
- NosewhistleA comic childhood name that a proud adult would refuse to admit to.
- TorrA neutral name that is easy to remember and easy to shout in a fight.
Naming a dragonborn character
- Write the clan first. "Thalendrax Zharoth" reads as dragonborn; "Zharoth Thalendrax" reads as a human with an unusual family name.
- Save the long names for clans. A four- or five-syllable personal name gets shortened at once, and a long clan name is a badge.
- Use childhood names for a backstory. If your dragonborn still uses one, it says something about their family or their pride.
- Favor sh, kh, th, zh and r. Avoid the l and n sounds of elvish, or the -ak and -ug of orcs, unless you want a mismatch.
- Say the name out loud. If it sounds like a sneeze, trim a syllable or swap the k for a th.
Questions people ask
What are good dragonborn names?
Good dragonborn names use draconic sounds such as sh, kh, th and zh: Bahash, Zharoth and Khorion for men, Kiava, Sythys and Ilura for women. In the traditional format, add a long clan name first, such as Thalendrax.
Do dragonborn have last names?
Dragonborn have clan names, and they are written before the personal name. A dragonborn named Kesh from Clan Serivorn is introduced as Serivorn Kesh. The clan name is long, and it carries more weight than the personal name.
What are dragonborn childhood names?
A childhood name is a nickname given to a young dragonborn, often for a habit or an accident, such as Snapjaw or Wing-Tester. In most tabletop settings, it is replaced with an adult name later, though some keep it out of affection.
How do I name a female dragonborn?
Use the same draconic sounds and end the personal name on a vowel, such as Kiava, Ilura or Zishithe. The clan name is the same for all members, so it does not change with gender.
Are these names from Dungeons & Dragons?
They follow the D&D structure of clan name, personal name and childhood name, but the names themselves come from syllable lists written for this site. They do not repeat names from any published D&D book.
