How tiefling names work
A tiefling's name tells you where they came from. Most get one of three kinds. An infernal name, handed down in a language that sounds like it was built for oaths: hard consonants, a closed ending, something like Akmenos or Nemeia. A human name from the family that raised them, because most tieflings are born to ordinary parents who never expected horns. Or a virtue name the tiefling picked for themselves, an idea rather than a word, such as Hope, Torment or Carrion.
The virtue name is the interesting one. It is usually chosen on leaving home and it is often aspirational or bitter: a tiefling who calls herself Mercy is making a claim, and one who calls himself Ruin is making a joke at someone's expense. That gives you a free piece of backstory. Pick the name first and ask your character why they chose it.
What makes a name sound infernal
Infernal names lean on k, z, x, th and m, and they tend to close on a consonant or a flat vowel (-os, -is, -ai, -eth). Two syllables reads as a common name, three as someone important. Avoid soft Elvish endings like -iel or -wen if you want the name to feel like it came from below; the generator uses them sparingly for that reason.
Use the style chips above to switch between traditions. "Human-born" gives a first name plus a surname, which suits a tiefling raised in a city who wants to blend in.
21 hand-picked tiefling names
- AkmenosHard k up front, a Greek-sounding -menos ending: old, formal and slightly menacing.
- NemeiaSoft for an infernal name, which makes it good for a tiefling who can pass as charming.
- MordaiTwo syllables and a dark vowel; short enough to shout across a battlefield.
- KallistaSounds almost human, which suits a character caught between two worlds.
- BarakasRepeated a sounds give it rhythm, so the rest of the table remembers it after one session.
- OriannaA long, singing name for a warlock or bard who wants to be noticed.
- ZarekosThe z and k together are about as infernal as English spelling gets.
- CriellaTwo liquids and an -ella ending: pretty on the surface with something off underneath.
- HopeThe classic virtue name. Works best when the character is anything but hopeful.
- TormentChosen names can be self-mocking. This one says the character knows what people think of them.
- CarrionBlunt and grim; a good fit for a rogue or a character who grew up hungry.
- VigilA quieter virtue. Suggests a paladin or cleric who watches more than fights.
- SolaceGentle, which makes it memorable on a creature people expect to be frightening.
- EmberNods to hellfire without saying it. Easy to spell, easy to say.
- TemerityAn unusual virtue word that turns into a nickname, Tem, after a few sessions.
- Cassian BlackmereA human-born name with a surname that hints the family knows more than it says.
- Tamsin DuskwaterAn ordinary Cornish first name paired with a slightly gothic surname; good for a city tiefling.
- Marek ThorneShort, human and a little severe, like someone who has had to be tough.
- Nemeia called SolaceBoth names at once, for a tiefling who uses one at home and the other on the road.
- IsharaOpen vowels and a soft sh: a name for a tiefling who is warmer than her reputation.
- RueOne syllable, doubles as regret. Works for a character with a past they don't talk about.
Choosing the right tiefling name
- Decide which tradition your tiefling uses day to day before you pick a name. That decision says more about the character than the name itself.
- Virtue names read best as single abstract nouns. "Hope" works; "Hopeful" sounds like a nickname.
- Say the name out loud at the speed you play at. Three syllables is the practical maximum for a name other players have to use every few minutes.
- If you want both, give your character an infernal name and a virtue name and let other characters choose which one to use. It's instant roleplay.
- Check the party list. Two names starting with the same letter and the same length (Mordai and Marek) will get mixed up every session.
Questions people ask
What are good tiefling names?
Good tiefling names fit one of three traditions: an infernal name such as Akmenos or Nemeia, a virtue name such as Hope, Ember or Torment, or an ordinary human name from the family that raised them. Choose the tradition first, then the name.
What is a tiefling virtue name?
A virtue name is an abstract noun a tiefling adopts, usually on leaving home, to describe what they want to be or what they have been through. Examples are Hope, Carrion, Solace and Temerity. It works like a chosen name rather than a birth name.
Do tieflings have last names?
Infernal and virtue names are usually used alone. Tieflings raised by human families often keep that family's surname, so a name like Tamsin Duskwater is just as valid as a single name.
How do I get tiefling names that start with a specific letter?
Use the First letter control above the list. The generator only shows letters it can produce with your current style, so you won't get an empty list.
