Naming a fish that cannot hear you
Fish do not come when called, and a name is entirely for the people in the room. That is freeing. There is no need for a crisp syllable or a name that cuts across a garden, which is why fish names run to puns and jokes more than dog names do. The most reliable ones are simple: Bubbles, Finn, Goldie, Splash.
What a fish name does need is to suit the tank. A single betta in a bowl on a desk usually gets a personal name, Sir Swimsalot or Sapphire, because you see it every day and it has a temperament. A shoal of twenty neon tetras does not need twenty names, and many owners name only the striking few. If you keep a mixed community, a theme helps: all ocean names, all gemstones, all sushi jokes.
Color drives a lot of naming, and for good reason: bettas, goldfish and koi come in a wide palette, and the color is what you notice first. A fiery red betta looks like an Ember or a Scarlett, a blue one like a Cobalt or an Azure, and an orange goldfish is almost always Goldie or Tangerine. Start from the color and the name usually appears.
Funny fish names
The humor in a fish name usually comes from one of three places: puns on the animal (Gillbert, Finnigan), food jokes (Sushi, Chowder, Sir Salmon), or a grand title on something that lives in a glass box (Admiral Bubblesworth). Food names are a common joke on goldfish because they are so often bought as feeder-sized. If the tank includes a very small fish and a very serious name, the effect is even better.
Names for a betta, a goldfish or a whole tank
Bettas are often housed alone and have a lot of personality, so they suit dramatic names, and the color style is especially good for them. Goldfish grow large and live a long time, so they take names that will still suit an animal that is a serious presence in the tank, such as Goldie, Marigold or Captain Finn. Community tanks lend themselves to themes: choose the ocean style for a saltwater or marine-themed tank, or gems and colors for a planted freshwater one.
Fish names worth considering
- BubblesThe default fish name for a reason: instantly readable and cheerful, and suits any small fish.
- FinnA simple pun on the fin, short enough to say a hundred times, and gender-neutral.
- GoldieA goldfish called Goldie is the classic. It is affectionate and easy for children to say.
- SplashSuits a lively fish that darts about the top of the tank and flicks the surface.
- PipOne small syllable for a tiny fish such as a neon tetra or a guppy.
- GuppyA slightly ironic name for a guppy, and a friendly one for any small fish.
- Sir SwimsalotA goofy title that suits the fish that never stops moving.
- Admiral BubblesworthA grand name for a small fish; funniest on a fish that looks quietly serious.
- SushiA dark-humored food joke that many goldfish owners enjoy, and it is easy to say.
- ChowderA thick, comfortable name for a round fish, and much loved for a fat goldfish.
- Professor FinniganA scholarly name for a fish that hangs in the middle of the tank and watches you.
- Captain FinnA short, neat title that gives a goldfish a seaman's seriousness.
- CoralA soft ocean name that suits a pink or orange fish, and works for a marine tank.

- ReefShort, strong and evocative, especially for a fish in a saltwater tank.
- NeptuneA large, Roman sea god name for a big, slow fish that dominates the tank.
- KelpA short, earthy name for a green fish or a fish that lives among plants.

- CobaltSolid, cool and a natural choice for a metallic blue fish.
- TangerineA bright orange goldfish, and a longer name that is fun to say at feeding time.
- MarigoldA flower and a color, suited to a golden fantail goldfish with a flowing tail.
- OnyxA dark, shiny name for a black moor goldfish or a black molly.
- ConfettiFor a fish with a scatter of colors and patches, or a calico goldfish.
Tips for naming a fish
- Start with the color. A fish's color, fin shape and swimming style tell you more about its name than anything else, and it makes the name feel earned.
- Do not name every fish in a big shoal. Name the ones you can pick out, and let the rest be "the tetras".
- For a community tank, choose a theme so the names look like a set: gemstones, sea gods, sushi, sailors, or old-fashioned human names.
- Pick something you are glad to say out loud, because you will introduce the fish to every visitor. Children in particular enjoy names that are easy to remember.
- Consider how long the fish will live. Goldfish and some bettas can live for years, so a name that ages well is a better bet than a joke you will tire of.
