Let the color morph pick the name

An axolotl is one of the few pets whose color changes what a good name looks like. The four common looks are almost different animals. Leucistic axolotls are pale pink with dark eyes and frilly red gills, and they look like cake decorations. Golden albinos are yellow with pink-gold gills. Melanoids are nearly black, without the gold flecks of a wild-colored animal. Wild types are mottled olive and brown, the color of a pond bottom. Choose the morph and half of the naming is done.

The rest comes from the face. Axolotls seem to smile because of the corners of their mouths, and the feathery external gills fan out like a crown. That gives you names of softness and a bit of royalty: Blossom, Petal, Opal, Sunny, Cosmo. Because they are fully aquatic salamanders that keep their gills for life, water and plant names also work well, especially for a wild type.

Do not worry about the animal answering to it. Axolotls do not recognize names, though many learn to swim to the front of the tank when they see you. So the name should please the humans, and being able to say it with a straight face at a vet appointment is a fair test.

Where the word comes from

The word axolotl comes from Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, and the animal is native to the lake system around what is now Mexico City. It is often linked with Xolotl, an Aztec god, and with words for water. Wild axolotls are critically endangered in the last of their canals, while many thousands live in aquariums and labs. If you want to honor the origin, Nahuatl names such as Xochitl (flower), Citlali (star) and Atl (water) are widely used given names and fit an axolotl well.

The style chips above group names by color and mood. Filter by first letter to give siblings from one clutch matching initials. A GFP axolotl, bred to glow under blue light, can lean on the dark or funny lists with something like Cosmo or Nebula.

Tips for naming an axolotl

  • Check the morph before you choose. A pink leucistic, a golden albino and a wild type look nothing alike, and a name that fits one can look silly on another.
  • Wait for the colors to settle. Juveniles darken or lighten as they grow, and a wild type that looked gray at eight weeks may turn olive.
  • Use one theme for a group: flowers for pinks, spices for golds, gemstones for darks, and pond plants for wild types.
  • Keep names short and soft. Axolotls have gentle faces, and one or two syllables suits them better than a title.
  • If you honor the Nahuatl roots, learn the pronunciation first. Xochitl is pronounced SO-cheel, and a quick search for audio saves an embarrassing mispronunciation.
