How people pick mermaid names

Mermaid names tend to sound like water. Liquids (l, r, n, m), soft sibilants (s, sh) and long open vowels give a name a rolling, tidal shape: Nerissa, Coralie, Thalia. Hard stops like k and t work as reef edges, so a name like Kael or Cormac tends to mark a warrior or a guard rather than a singer.

There are two older traditions to steal from. Sea nymphs and river spirits in Greek and Roman writing carry endings like -issa, -ea and -ine, which is why so many mermaid names sound like they came out of a myth. The other tradition is plainer: a treasure name. A mermaid called Pearl, Cowrie or Spindrift is named for what the sea gives up, and a name that small is easy for a child to love.

Do not reach for the names attached to famous mermaids. A red-haired mermaid called after a certain animated film will always sound like a costume. Anything that carries a little of the tide and a little of your own invention lasts longer.

Merman and merfolk names

Mermen and merfolk of any gender need the same water in their names, with a firmer edge. Endings like -ion, -andros and -idas read as male in the classical fashion, while short neutral names (Rill, Cove, Kai) suit anyone. Use the gender control above to switch between mermaid, merman and neutral merfolk names.

The Royal court chip adds a title and a place, such as Princess Nerissa of the Glass Reef. Underwater courts feel more real when they have geography, and a name tied to a reef or a sunken bell gives you a map before you have drawn one.

Picking a mermaid name

  • Decide if she comes from the surface world, a coastal village or the deep. A shallow-water mermaid can have a friendly word name; a deep-sea one wants something longer and stranger.
  • Read it as a song lyric. Names with l, n and open vowels are easy to hold on a note, and that matters for a mermaid who sings.
  • Give merfolk a family naming pattern, such as all treasure names or all classical endings. Underwater courts feel more real when they follow a convention.
  • Try a nickname on the treasure names. Coralie may be Cora, Coral or Cor depending on who is speaking to her.
  • Avoid the names of famous mermaid characters. Their names bring their stories with them.
