How pirates actually got their names
The pirates people remember were mostly ordinary sailors with ordinary names. Blackbeard was born Edward Teach (or Thatch, depending on the record), and most of the men and women who sailed in the early 1700s had the plainest names in the English language: John, Thomas, Mary, Anne. What made a pirate name was what got added on top, a nickname earned below decks or a title that came with the ship.
Crew nicknames were practical before they were colorful. With four Toms aboard, you needed a way to shout for the right one, so sailors got named after a habit, a scar, a trade or a joke. That is why the best pirate nicknames sound earned rather than chosen. Gunpowder Meg handled the powder. Parson Ned probably quoted scripture at the wrong moments. Three-Finger Walt has a story nobody asks about twice.
Where pirate names go wrong is piling on theme. Captain Plank Skullcrusher McRum sounds like a restaurant mascot. One strong idea per name is plenty: a plain period first name, a solid surname, and at most one nickname.
Pirate names for women
Anne Bonny and Mary Read are the famous examples of women sailing with pirate crews in the Caribbean, and their names show how unremarkable a real pirate's name could be. For female pirate names that feel right for the period, start with the names on the female list here (Temperance, Keziah, Honor, Susannah) and let the nickname carry the attitude.
The Crew nickname style pairs short period forms like Meg, Moll, Bess and Sukey with a byname. Those diminutives were everyday usage in the 1700s, so Cutlass Moll sounds like a real person on a real deck and not like a costume.
Why this generator leaves out famous pirates
Names like Blackbeard, Calico Jack and Captain Kidd belong to real people, and fictional ones like Long John Silver belong to famous stories. Using them for your character makes every other player think of the original. The generator filters those out, so what you get is a pirate nobody has heard of yet.
Pirate names with a bit of salt on them
- Captain Josiah TregarthA Puritan first name with a Cornish surname; sounds like a respectable merchant captain who changed careers.
- Gunpowder MegA job-based nickname on a period diminutive. You know exactly what she does aboard and why nobody smokes near her.
- Captain Temperance SladeA virtue name worn by a pirate is irony the whole table will enjoy, and Slade is short and hard.
- Parson NedSuggests a former preacher or a sailor who reads the burial service; either way he has a past.
- Captain Silas SaltbeardA beard nickname in the classic mold that is not already taken by a real pirate.
- Three-Finger WaltAn injury nickname, the most common kind at sea, and it invites a story every time it is used.
- Keziah PenhallowA biblical name and a Cornish surname that could sit on a real 1720s muster roll.
- Cutlass MollMoll was an everyday period nickname for Mary, and the weapon tells you how she settles arguments.
- Commodore Obadiah CraneA grand title for a pirate who has somehow collected three ships, with a thin wading-bird surname.
- Lamplight JemA quieter nickname for the sailor who keeps the night watch or reads the charts below.
- Tom "Sixpence" HarrowThe quoted nickname in the middle is the classic pirate-roster shape, and sixpence hints at a cheap bribe.
- Captain Kincaid the HonestAn epithet no pirate deserves, which makes it funnier and possibly true.
- Brimstone BessAlliteration makes it memorable, and brimstone suits a gunner or a sailor with a hellfire temper.
- Barnacle ZekeThe crewman who never leaves the ship. Cheerful, a little slow and very hard to get rid of.
- Captain Honor GallowHonor was a real period given name, and the gallows surname reminds everyone where pirates end up.
- Quartermaster Lemuel VossThe quartermaster ran discipline and shares, so a stiff biblical name suits the role.
- Sharkbait RookA neutral name with a nickname that implies the sailor fell overboard once and came back.
- Dorothy "Squall" MercerAn ordinary name hiding a stormy temper, with a trade surname that suggests a merchant family.
- Whistling GilSailors thought whistling on deck called up wind, so this nickname makes him either lucky or cursed.
- Captain Absalom RuddA dramatic biblical name with a blunt surname; reads as a captain who gives long speeches before boarding.
- Tidewater TessA coastal nickname on a short period name, fitting a pilot who knows every shoal in the bay.
- Pewter HalA cheap-metal nickname for the crewman who sells everything he loots before the ship makes port.
How to pick a pirate name
- Start plain. Choose a period first name like Josiah or Temperance, then add a nickname only if it tells you something about the character.
- Make the nickname about a job, a scar, a habit or a joke. Powder, cutlass, parson and three-finger all work because they explain themselves.
- Use short forms for crew and full names for captains. Ned and Moll feel like shipmates; Captain Nathaniel Crane feels like someone who signs papers.
- Skip names that belong to real or famous fictional pirates. The table will spend the session making references instead of listening.
- For a group, give each crew member a different kind of nickname so the names don't blur together when called across the deck.
Questions people ask
What are some good pirate names?
Good pirate names pair a plain period name with a nickname that tells a story, such as Gunpowder Meg, Parson Ned or Captain Silas Saltbeard. Keep it to one strong idea. Real pirates mostly had ordinary names, and the nickname did the rest.
What are good female pirate names?
Period first names such as Temperance, Keziah, Honor and Susannah work well for female pirates, as do short forms like Meg, Moll and Bess with a nickname attached. Cutlass Moll, Brimstone Bess and Captain Temperance Slade all fit the Golden Age of piracy.
How did real pirates get their nicknames?
Most pirate nicknames came from appearance, clothing, a job aboard ship or an incident. Calico Jack is usually said to be named for his calico clothes, and Blackbeard for his beard. Crews needed nicknames to tell apart the many sailors who shared the same common first names.
What was Blackbeard's real name?
Blackbeard's real name is usually given as Edward Teach, though some records spell it Thatch or Thach. He operated in the Caribbean and off the American colonies in the early 1700s and died in 1718. This generator does not produce his name or other real pirates' names.
