What makes a good tabaxi name
Tabaxi don't use first names and surnames. In the published lore, each one gets a single name that reads like a line of poetry, chosen by the clan from omens, family history and whatever caught someone's eye on the day of the birth. The clan name follows in brackets, and clans are usually named for a landmark near their home ground. So a full name looks like Moss on the Rooftop (Red Fern clan), and nobody finds that odd.
Because the full phrase is a mouthful, tabaxi go by a short nickname pulled from it. Moss on the Rooftop becomes Moss. Counts the Bells becomes Bells, or Counter if the party is feeling cheeky. The best tabaxi names give you a nickname you like and a full name that says something about the character's temperament. A cat called Waits for the Tide is patient; one called Steals the Lanterns is not.
Building tabaxi names from scratch
Most tabaxi names fit one of four shapes. A thing in a place (Ember beside the Garden Wall). An adjective and a thing (Crooked Kettle). A habit, written as a verb and its object (Chases the Comets). Or a number and a plural (Twelve Kites), which suits a tabaxi from a clan that counts things. The generator uses all four, and the Phrase only chip drops the clan if you want to add your own.
Clan names work better when they sound like somewhere on a map. Pair a color, texture or height with a landform: Salt Marsh, Jade Terrace, High Canopy. If your campaign has a jungle or desert region, pick a clan that could plausibly live there, and ask your DM whether it can appear in play.
Tabaxi names we like, with the thinking behind each
- Moss on the Rooftop (Red Fern clan)Soft, green and a little lazy; the nickname Moss suits a tabaxi who naps in high places.
- Steals the LanternsA habit as a name tells you exactly what kind of rogue this is before they roll anything.
- Crooked Kettle (Salt Marsh clan)Homely and slightly battered, for a tabaxi cook, tinkerer or artificer.
- Waits for the TidePatience written into the name; good for a monk or a ranger who ambushes instead of chasing.
- Twelve Kites (High Canopy clan)Numbers make tabaxi names feel like they came from a real tradition with its own logic.
- Ember beside the Garden WallWarm and domestic with a hint of danger, which fits a sorcerer who grew up sheltered.
- Chases the CometsBig ambition in three words. Nickname it Comet and you have a runner or a stargazer.
- Hums to the Moon (Jade Terrace clan)Musical and nocturnal; about as bard as a tabaxi name gets.
- Barefoot ThistlePrickly and scrappy, for a character who is small, quick and hard to hold onto.
- Rumor under the MarketSuggests a tabaxi who trades in secrets; the nickname Rumor is great for a spy.
- Counts the Coins (Copper Ridge clan)Clan and name reinforce each other, so this reads as a merchant family with a reputation.
- Forgotten VelvetOddly sad and luxurious at once, a good hook for a tabaxi with a lost noble past.
- Thunder behind the Sleeping HillRumbling and ominous; the nickname Thunder suits a barbarian who is quiet until they aren't.
- Laughing PepperTwo cheerful words with some heat in them, for a comic-relief tabaxi who still bites.
- Follows the Sparrows (Long Reed clan)A hunter's habit and a wetland clan, which gives you backstory before session one.
- Seven RaindropsDelicate and precise; suggests a wizard or alchemist who measures everything.
- WickA nickname-length name that hints at a longer original like Wick in the Last Step.
- Saffron across the Dunes (Sun Mesa clan)Color, spice and desert travel in one line; ideal for a caravan tabaxi.
- Tickles the ThunderPlayfully reckless, the name of someone who pokes dangerous things to see what happens.
- HazelReads as an everyday name to other races, handy for a tabaxi who wants to blend in.
- Stubborn Comet (Iron Crag clan)The adjective undercuts the grandeur, which makes it memorable and a bit funny.
Getting the most out of a tabaxi name
- Pick the nickname first. Players will say it hundreds of times, so make sure it's one or two syllables you actually like.
- Let the full name hint at a habit or a flaw, then play that habit. Chases the Comets should get distracted by shiny things.
- Keep the clan name to two words. Anything longer gets dropped from conversation and stops being useful.
- Mix in lowercase prepositions (on the, under the) when you write the name down; it reads more naturally than Title Case on every word.
- If two party members share an initial, change the nickname rather than the full name. The phrase can stay; the short form is what gets confused.
Questions people ask
How do tabaxi names work?
Each tabaxi has one long name that reads like a descriptive phrase, such as Moss on the Rooftop, followed by a clan name in brackets, such as (Red Fern clan). Day to day, tabaxi go by a short nickname taken from the phrase, like Moss.
What are good tabaxi names?
Good tabaxi names describe a habit or an image: Steals the Lanterns, Waits for the Tide, Crooked Kettle, Twelve Kites. The strongest ones give you a nickname that is easy to say and a full name that hints at the character's personality.
Are tabaxi names male or female?
Tabaxi names aren't gendered. A phrase like Hums to the Moon works for any tabaxi, which is why this generator has no gender filter. If you want a name to lean one way, choose the nickname with that in mind.
What should a tabaxi clan name be?
Name the clan after a landmark or landform near its home, usually two words: an adjective and a place such as Salt Marsh, High Canopy or Copper Ridge. Write it in brackets after the tabaxi's own name, with the word clan.
Can a tabaxi change their name?
Nothing stops it. A tabaxi who leaves the clan might keep the phrase but pick a new nickname, or take a new phrase that reflects what happened on the road. It's a good story beat for a character arc.
